I certainly had a list of “I’d NEVERs” as well. Given my tendency to be obsessive and my drive for perfection, my list may have been longer than most! Many went out the window right away, by the time I had my second even more…now with three, I don’t even want to think about it!
So we all have swallowed a few of our “I’d NEVERs,” but what about those things you didn’t even consider a possibility. Those things that weren’t even on your list because, it is common sense that you wouldn’t do them. But then motherhood throws you a curve ball and you are doing something you wouldn’t have even thought to put on your “I’d NEVER” list just to survive the moment.
Case in point.
The other night the baby was in his high chair eating. Well, he was supposed to be eating. He is into finger foods these days and it is a total mess (by mess I mean nightmare … see note above about obsessive perfectionism)! He was sitting in his high chair throwing the food on the floor, looking down at it and then crying because it was gone. REALLY? You just threw it on the floor! I picked the food up, threw it in the trash and gave him more. I had done this more than once. More than twice. I was spent. He just kept doing it and crying. Finally, I cleaned him up and just put him on the floor. He was happy to be on the floor and I was about the clean up his latest mess. He is super fast on all fours these days and was over by the high chair in no time. He was eating his dinner before I finished drying my hands!
And I let him. I stood there and just let him. Maybe I should be embarrassed. I mean really…I was letting my baby eat off the floor. Yes, that was me. He was happy and eating off the floor and I let him. SERIOUSLY. To be honest, I am not all that embarrassed. You do what you have to do to survive sometimes.
I mentioned this to a friend at dinner and she confessed that her daughter had complained about her eye. Mom checked it out and sure enough she was showing signs of pink eye. My friend had a big meeting at work, so put the antibiotics drops in her eyes and sent her to school. I don’t judge. If it was back in my working days I probably would have done the same thing!
